My Spicebox
Every Indian household has a spicebox. It can be small, medium or large and is filled with various spices used in daily cooking. Some households have two boxes; one for the basic spices and another for additional, less frequently used ones.
Some kitchens may have square spiceboxes or just a spice rack, depending on personal preferences.
I was introduced to the spices at a young age of 11 and although my spicebox has evolved over time, it has the following basics:
- Turmeric powder
- Red chilli powder
- Coriander and Cumin powder
- Mustard seeds
- Cumin seeds
- Cinnamon and Cloves
- Dried red chillies
* I keep pink Himalayan salt in a separate container
The bottom four spices are used in their whole form, for tempering. (These are used in a particular way which I will cover in other posts)
